Israel launched fresh airstrikes and artillery barrages in southern Lebanon on Monday evening, just days after Washington, Tel Aviv and Beirut signed a US-brokered framework agreement intended to de-escalate the border and pave the way for a phased withdrawal. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) struck targets near Nabatiyeh and along the Blue Line, defying the trilateral accord that Defence Minister Israel Katz publicly endorsed only hours earlier. Katz told reporters that Israel would “not withdraw a millimetre” until Hezbollah is fully disarmed and insisted Washington had given its backing during a visit by US CENTCOM chief General Brad Cooper last week .
The framework, announced on 26 June and signed three days later, envisages reciprocal steps to reduce hostilities and eventually restore Lebanese sovereignty over the south. Yet Hezbollah has declared the deal “null and void,” Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has rejected it, and Israeli strikes resumed within 48 hours of the ink drying. Katz added that Israel had asked the Lebanese Armed Forces to storm the Ali al-Taher hill near Nabatiyeh and destroy a Hezbollah bunker, but Beirut refused, prompting further IDF operations . The UN’s top brass still called the accord a “milestone” on Monday, while warning that unresolved issues along the Blue Line could reignite conflict .
In Gaza, an Israeli strike on the Mawasi humanitarian zone of Khan Younis killed two people and set tents ablaze on Sunday, according to local health officials and Al Jazeera footage . The attack came despite a shaky ceasefire that has been “theoretical” since October 2025, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting at least 1,045 Palestinian deaths since then .
Turkey’s self-styled “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” condemned Israel on Monday for recognising the 1915 Armenian genocide, accusing Jerusalem of hypocrisy over Palestinian displacement . Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich reiterated calls to establish Jewish settlements in Gaza, further complicating any prospect of Palestinian statehood .
Syria also protested Israeli incursions in Quneitra and Daraa, describing them as violations of its sovereignty and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement . Against this backdrop, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of the fastest expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank since 1967, calling it the gravest displacement crisis since the Six-Day War .
