Russia launched 135 Shahed-type attack drones overnight on June 23, killing five civilians and injuring 49 across Ukraine, as drone strikes intensified on Kherson and other regions, the Ukrainian Air Force reported. The strikes, which included a direct hit on a bus stop in Kherson, marked the latest escalation in a relentless campaign targeting civilian infrastructure and transport hubs.

Ukrainian forces struck back with precision, hitting over 60 targets in occupied Crimea on the night of June 22-23, including Russian air defences and rare Orion unmanned aerial vehicles, according to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces. Ukrainian military intelligence also released footage showing strikes on Russian military equipment near Chonhar, a key border crossing between Kherson Oblast and Russian-occupied Crimea.

The attacks extended to Moscow, where Ukrainian drones ignited an oil refinery, disrupting fuel supplies and exacerbating a growing logistics crisis in Russia. In response, Russian state media accused Ukraine of escalating strikes on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, claiming Kyiv launched dozens of nightly attacks to destabilise operations and intimidate workers.

Civilian casualties mounted across multiple regions. In Kryvyi Rih, a Russian ballistic missile strike killed three and injured 23, while a separate attack on a gas station and parking lot left one person injured. In Kharkiv Oblast, a 58-year-old man was seriously injured when Russian forces dropped explosives from a drone onto a motorcyclist.

The Black Sea crisis deepened after Russian forces attacked three foreign-flagged civilian cargo ships, killing an Egyptian crew member and setting one vessel ablaze. Turkey, which had two sailors injured in the strike, summoned both sides to reduce tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s strikes on Crimean supply lines continued to cripple Russian logistics. Footage showed Ukrainian forces targeting a key logistics bridge in occupied Vasylivka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, a critical route for supplying forces in the Stepnohirsk sector. The Kerch seaport was set ablaze in a repeated Ukrainian attack, further straining Russia’s fuel and transport networks.

As the frontline remained under extreme pressure, with intense street battles in Kostyantynivka and Russian forces infiltrating fortified areas near Donetsk, analysts warned of a prolonged and increasingly volatile conflict. With no immediate path to de-escalation, the cycle of strikes and counterstrikes showed no signs of abating.
