British woman stabbed to death at German train station; suspect arrested

A 31-year-old British woman died after being stabbed at Rosenheim train station in southern Germany early Sunday, police said. The attack occurred shortly before 1 a.m. local time, and the woman was taken to a hospital where she succumbed to severe injuries.

Federal police detained a 27-year-old German man from the Fürstenfeldbruck district immediately after the stabbing, according to Bavarian police. The suspect was arrested at the scene and later appeared before a remand judge on Sunday, German news agency dpa reported. Authorities have not released the names of the victim or the suspect, citing German privacy rules.

The woman had arrived in Rosenheim after a flight from London and was waiting on platform 4/5 for a night train to Salzburg when she was attacked, police said. Investigators believe it is unlikely the victim and the suspect knew each other. They are seeking witnesses who may have seen “an argument or physical altercation” at the station in the early hours of Sunday.

Rosenheim police stated the forensic investigation in an underpass at the station was completed before the first trains resumed service Sunday morning, with minimal disruption to rail traffic. Deutsche Bahn, the national train operator, said its security personnel at the scene were “still in shock” and would need time to process the incident. “Our thoughts today are with the family and friends of the young woman,” the company said in a statement .

Rosenheim Mayor Abuzar Erdogan said there were “no indications of a security threat in our city or of any link to our Herbstfest,” a local festival currently underway. The criminal investigation department is working with prosecutors to determine the motive, he added .

A British Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed they were supporting the victim’s family and liaising with local authorities . Police continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward.
