PARIS — A group linked to Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, launched a disinformation campaign targeting center-left European Parliament member Raphaël Glucksmann, a likely candidate in France’s 2027 presidential election, Glucksmann said on Tuesday.
In a post on X, Glucksmann stated he was informed by France’s Secretariat-General for National Defence and Security that the operation was “directly controlled by the GRU” and carried out by the pro-Russian network Storm-1516. The campaign included a fake article published on a website mimicking the left-wing news portal Blast and a manipulated video claiming his partner, television presenter Léa Salamé, had attempted to bribe journalists to portray him favorably. A deepfake video also misused the voice of investigative journalist Edwy Plenel, co-founder of Mediapart, to amplify the false content.
A French security source confirmed to AFP that the operation was detected late last week and described it as “relatively sophisticated” despite its “rather low visibility” on social media. The same network, Storm-1516, targeted former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe in July, spreading false claims about his health.
Plenel denied the allegations in a Saturday post on X, calling the content “entirely false” and an example of “operations aimed at digital destabilization.” Glucksmann, a vocal critic of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said the attack was “a foretaste of what’s to come” and vowed France would not allow “hostile foreign powers to steal an election so crucial for the country’s future.”
The Russian Embassy in Paris did not respond to a request for comment from AFP. The disinformation efforts follow France’s expulsion order against pro-Kremlin journalist Xenia Fedorova, whom Glucksmann had previously accused of being a Russian agent. Fedorova left France before the order was executed.
