Croatian authorities gave Brač residents conflicting fire advice amid power cuts
Residents of Brač received inadequate emergency guidance during the Milna fire on Sept. 15, 2026, as authorities directed them to follow updates on television and radio despite widespread power outages in the area.
Croatia’s Early Warning and Crisis Management System (SRUUK) was activated at 23:28 on Saturday after a large fire, driven by strong winds, spread toward Milna and nearby bays, including Duboka and Osibova, where the Resort Gava with numerous tourists is located. Over 200 firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from reaching populated areas. Residents in the endangered zone received an SMS or Cell Broadcast warning with a link to the Ministry of the Interior’s Civil Protection Directorate page, which advised them to monitor further announcements via television, radio, and official links—despite Milna already being without electricity .
Confusion deepened earlier that evening when the Milna Volunteer Fire Department posted a notice on Facebook at around 23:00 calling the situation critical and urging citizens to prepare private boats for a potential evacuation. The post was deleted about 30 minutes later, and authorities clarified there was no official evacuation order. Some residents, uncertain whether to flee, gathered near the sea with their belongings .
