Russia escalated its aggression in Ukraine and Europe on Sunday as its three-day parliamentary election concluded, with officials in Kyiv denouncing the vote in occupied Ukrainian territories as illegal and coercive. The European Commission called the balloting in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions “another blatant violation of international law,” adding that the EU would never recognize the results .
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics warned of further escalation, stating that Russia would likely conduct mobilization and new operations against Ukraine after the election. He noted increased Russian-inspired sabotage, espionage and subversion targeting infrastructure in countries supporting Ukraine, including Latvia .
French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk have also warned of heightened Russian actions against Europe. Recent incidents include drone overflights in Poland, Romania and Lithuania, as well as suspected sabotage attacks on military and infrastructure sites in Southeastern Europe .
Russian authorities reported cyberattacks on electronic voting systems and a large-scale drone attack on Moscow Oblast during the election, though these claims could not be independently verified. The vote, widely expected to retain the dominance of Putin’s United Russia party, was framed by the Kremlin as a test of public support for the war in Ukraine .
