Norway eyes ban on smart glasses with facial recognition amid privacy fears
Norway is considering tighter regulations on smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones, with Digitalisation Minister Karianne Tung highlighting concerns over privacy and the potential for covert recording in public. The government is exploring a ban on facial recognition features for public use and has formed an expert group to advise on rules for wearable tech, including earbuds and other camera-equipped devices. Critics have dubbed some models “pervert glasses” due to fears they could be used to secretly film strangers, particularly women, as the devices can resemble ordinary eyewear while recording .
Meanwhile, France has implemented a new law targeting ultra-fast fashion, imposing fees on certain garments that will eventually reach nearly €20 per item. The measure, which took effect on Tuesday, aims to curb environmental and local economic impacts. China has criticized the law as “clearly discriminatory,” urging its suspension and warning of potential retaliatory measures. A source from France’s Foreign Trade and Attractiveness Office denied any discrimination, stating the law was introduced to “protect the environment and consumers” and that China could raise concerns with the WTO if it had technical issues .
In Croatia, the city of Varaždin will become the first continental city to ban the sale of alcohol in shops and at petrol stations after 22:00, with additional penalties for public consumption outside licensed premises. Mayor Neven Bosilj cited public order disturbances as the reason for the measure, which is expected to take effect in November following a public consultation and City Council vote .
