Alicia del Río of the Tenants’ Union told the crowd that contracts should automatically renew and rents should not rise unless incomes do . Average rents in Madrid now exceed €23 per square meter, or over €1,150 for a 50-square-meter apartment, a 60% increase in five years, according to the real estate portal idealista.com .
