Romanian far-right AUR demands constitutional changes to force early elections and oust president
Romania’s Alliance for the Union of Romans (AUR) announced on Sunday it would push for constitutional amendments to impose strict deadlines on resolving government crises, following a National Leadership Council meeting in Mehedinți County.
The party proposed a constitutional change requiring the president to nominate a prime ministerial candidate within a set timeframe, with the president’s mandate automatically ending if the deadline is missed. AUR also called for the automatic dissolution of Parliament if it fails to approve a government within 60 days of the first request and after rejecting at least two investiture bids. “The current crisis has exposed a major vulnerability in constitutional mechanisms,” AUR stated in a press release .
AUR further demanded early elections, framing them as the only democratic solution to Romania’s political deadlock. In a unanimously adopted resolution, the party argued that the current parliamentary configuration—comprising the Social Democratic Party (PSD), National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR)—had reached an impasse, unable to form a stable majority or legitimate government. “Romania cannot remain for months with a dismissed government while the president calculates which premier suits him,” the resolution read .
The party criticized President Nicușor Dan for refusing to nominate a new prime minister, alleging his reluctance stemmed from fear of early elections and AUR’s potential electoral gains. “A president cannot keep a country blocked just because he dislikes the outcome a new vote might produce,” AUR’s statement said .
AUR also warned that if Dan continued to block early elections, the party would pursue his suspension and a referendum to remove him from office. “If Nicușor Dan does not respect the basic rules of democracy, AUR has the duty to offer a democratic solution: returning to the popular vote by suspending the president and organizing a referendum for his dismissal,” the party stated .
