Netanyahu accuses Iran of attempting to assassinate one of his sons ahead of Israeli election
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Iran had attempted to assassinate one of his two sons, offering no evidence or further details about the alleged plot. “Something incredible happened: Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to kill one of my sons,” Netanyahu said during a phone interview with Israel’s Channel 14 .
The claim came as Netanyahu discussed security arrangements ahead of Israel’s general election on Oct. 27, responding to reports that the Shin Bet domestic security agency had declined to provide a security detail for Gadi Eisenkot, the former army chief and a leading rival in the upcoming vote. Netanyahu voiced support for around-the-clock protection for Eisenkot, stating, “Without that, [the Iranians] will succeed” .
Netanyahu has two sons and a daughter. His elder son, Yair, 35, has spent extended periods in Miami since early 2024, reportedly under Shin Bet protection. The cost of his security and the potential risk to the area have drawn controversy in Israel and among some residents in South Florida .
Shortly after Netanyahu’s remarks, Israeli journalist Amit Segal wrote on Telegram that the alleged assassination attempt had been known for “months” but was subject to a gag order .
The allegations follow a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Feb. 28 that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and four members of his family, including his daughter Boshra and his 14-month-old granddaughter Zahra. Khamenei’s son Mojtaba was named the new supreme leader a week later and has since pledged to “avenge the blood” of his father, according to a message read on state TV. Mojtaba Khamenei was reportedly wounded in the same strikes and has not been seen in public since his appointment .
In July, Israeli authorities granted extended personal protection to Netanyahu’s two sons and his wife for at least five years, regardless of the election outcome. The decision came under pressure from Netanyahu and his wife, according to The Jerusalem Post .
Netanyahu’s coalition trails in opinion polls ahead of the October election, which comes amid heightened tensions following the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Iran’s mission at the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the accusation .
