Pakistan court orders jailed ex-PM Imran Khans hospital transfer for medical checks

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within 48 hours for medical examination by a board including specialists and his personal physician, Faisal Sultan. The three-judge panel also mandated weekly family visits and telephone calls with his sons, citing constitutional obligations to safeguard his life, health, and dignity .
Khan, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2023 on corruption charges he calls politically motivated. His lawyers state he suffers from severe health issues, including near-total vision loss in his right eye due to delayed treatment—a claim the government previously disputed. In February, his legal team said he retained only 15% vision in that eye; authorities later asserted he had regained about 70% .
The court warned Khan’s supporters against gathering outside the hospital, a breach of the order. Khan, who led Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, was ousted in a 2022 no-confidence vote and later sentenced to 17 years alongside his wife, Bushra Bibi, in separate cases. His imprisonment has sparked protests and a government crackdown .
Zulfikar Bukhari, a Khan adviser, told AFP the transfer should have occurred earlier to prevent his health from deteriorating. The court’s order follows months of petitions from Khan’s family and physicians for access to specialized care .
Meanwhile, Norway’s King Harald, 89, was hospitalized Monday at the National Hospital in Oslo due to fluid retention caused by cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a rare blood disorder. The palace confirmed he will remain on sick leave for two weeks, with Crown Prince Haakon assuming regent duties .
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who recovered from a June lung transplant, visited the king on Tuesday, as did his sister, Princess Astrid. The palace declined to comment on the visits . Harald has faced recurring health issues, including a 2024 pacemaker implantation after collapsing in Malaysia .
