U.S. shoots down two Iranian drones over Strait of Hormuz as tensions escalate
The United States shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz late on Saturday, the Pentagon said, as the 100th day of fighting between Iran and Israel entered a new phase of escalation. The U.S. Central Command confirmed that American fighter jets intercepted the drones, which it said were directly threatening international maritime traffic through the strategic waterway. The incident follows a series of reciprocal strikes and counter-strikes that have kept regional tensions at a boil since the conflict flared in late February.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry immediately condemned the U.S. action as a “flagrant violation” of the April 8 ceasefire agreement and accused Washington of “hostile and provocative behaviour.” In a statement carried by state media, the ministry warned that the U.S. would be held responsible for any further escalation. The Pentagon, however, maintained that its intercepts were defensive and aimed at protecting commercial shipping, which carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil through the strait.
The latest clash comes amid reports that the U.S. is considering redirecting frozen Iranian assets to Gulf allies such as Kuwait and Bahrain to help repair damage caused by months of Iranian missile and drone attacks. According to Reuters, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been tasked with assessing the feasibility of such a move, which could further inflame relations with Tehran. Iranian officials have already warned that any such seizure would derail ongoing negotiations and deepen the crisis.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint. On Sunday, Iran launched additional drone strikes against Kuwait and Bahrain, according to Lebanese and Belgian outlets tracking the conflict. Meanwhile, Israel continued its cross-border operations, striking targets in southern Lebanon after Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel. Three Lebanese soldiers were killed in Israeli retaliatory strikes, raising fears of a wider regional conflagration.
Analysts say the cycle of retaliation shows no sign of abating. “The risk of miscalculation is extremely high,” said a senior European diplomat based in Brussels. “Both sides are operating on thin margins of restraint, and the presence of U.S. forces in the Gulf is increasingly seen as a tripwire.” With the war now in its fourth month and no clear diplomatic off-ramp in sight, the downing of the two drones underscores how quickly localized incidents can spiral into broader confrontation.
