A power failure at a signaling center in Greater Manchester halted train services across north-west England and the Midlands on Thursday, causing widespread cancellations and delays of up to 60 minutes. Network Rail confirmed the outage occurred just before 2 p.m. local time, disrupting operations at the Manchester Rail Operating Centre. An emergency generator failed to activate in time to maintain signaling, and though power was later restored, safety protocols required a controlled restart of systems.
Northern Rail and TransPennine Express suspended all services, advising passengers not to travel. Northern Rail permitted ticket use on Bee Network buses and Metrolink lines as alternatives. TransPennine Express also cited the Network Rail power failure in its decision to halt operations, warning of cancellations across all routes. Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, and Transport for Wales services were similarly affected.
Chris Wright, north-west route director at National Rail, said services were beginning to resume but major disruption would persist for the rest of the day. “We’re sorry to passengers impacted by a power issue in Manchester which is causing significant delays to trains through the city,” Wright said. “While some services are now running, major disruption is expected for the rest of the day.” Passengers in Greater Manchester were told they could use Bee Network buses or Metrolink services at no extra cost.
In Norway, over 3,000 households lost power on Thursday afternoon, primarily in Gjerdrum, Jessheim, Eidsvoll, and Skarnes. Elvia, the grid operator, reported that outages began around 4 p.m., with a surge at 5:45 p.m. By 6 p.m., most households had power restored, except for a few hundred in Eidsvoll. Åsmund Strand Johansen, Elvia’s leader for communication and government relations, said crews were working to restore power as quickly as possible. Lightning activity was recorded in Oslo-marka and Jessheim, though Johansen noted no confirmed link to the outages.
In Sweden, more than 20,000 households in Hudiksvall municipality experienced a power outage around noon. Ellevio spokesperson Youbert Aziz said fault localization was underway, with sectioning of lines initiated to restore power. By 12:45 p.m., electricity had been restored.
In Ukraine, Kherson remained without power following an overnight Russian attack, with officials stating it would take several days to fully resume supply.
