The Israeli military confirmed it had struck Hezbollah positions in response to a coordinated ambush on Friday in which Hezbollah fighters destroyed three Israeli Merkava tanks and killed four soldiers, including a battalion commander, at Ali al-Taher Heights in southern Lebanon . National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir responded by declaring that “all of Lebanon must burn,” vowing that Israeli security would take precedence over American pressure to rein in hostilities .
The renewed violence has displaced thousands of residents from southern districts such as Tyre and Bint Jbeil, who are fleeing to Sidon and Beirut as Israeli attacks continue . Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israeli strikes killed six people on Saturday, including an Al Jazeera cameraman, Ahmed Wishah, whose brother was also killed in a separate strike three months ago . The Israeli military accused Wishah of being a Hamas sniper operative without providing evidence.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s support for Lebanon in a call with President Joseph Aoun, stressing the need to disarm Hezbollah, while Aoun called for a comprehensive ceasefire ahead of next week’s US-brokered talks with Israel . Iran, meanwhile, announced it had closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to the Israeli strikes, further escalating regional tensions.
The latest bloodshed underscores the fragility of the US-Iran ceasefire framework, which was announced hours before the first Israeli strikes on Lebanon on Friday. With both sides trading blame and civilian casualties mounting, the prospect of de-escalation appears increasingly remote.
