Belgian Prince Laurent formally recognizes son as prince of Belgium after years of speculation

Prince Laurent of Belgium officially recognized Clément Vandenkerckhove as his son in a civil registry filing, granting the 26-year-old the title of prince of Belgium. The formalization occurred in February when Laurent and Clément signed documents together at a municipal office, though the recognition was publicly confirmed on Wednesday by the Belgian newspaper *Le Soir* .
Clément is the son of Laurent and Iris Vandenkerckhove, a Flemish model and singer known professionally as Wendy Van Wanten. Their brief relationship in the 1990s preceded Laurent’s 2003 marriage to Princess Clara of Belgium. Clément was born on Aug. 16, 2000, but his paternity remained unconfirmed for years. In September 2025, Laurent publicly acknowledged being Clément’s biological father through the Belga news agency, ending decades of speculation. At the time, Clément had previously denied the connection in a 2021 television interview.
The legal recognition follows a period of growing closeness between father and son. In an interview published this month, Clément described their relationship as “very good,” noting that Laurent is supportive and makes time for him. Both share a passion for automobiles, which Clément said has provided them with many hours of conversation. He added that the formalization of his status does not change how he views their relationship .
Belgian media have reacted positively to the news. Dutch outlet RTL reported on Wednesday that the country has welcomed Clément as its newest prince .
