Latvias United List party wins election with 36.6% of vote, PM Kulbergs eyes new coalition

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’ centrist United List party won the country’s parliamentary election with 36.6% of the vote, according to partial results with 88% of ballots counted . The vote, held on Oct. 3, determines the 100-member Saeima for the next four years.
Kulbergs, who has led a four-party coalition since May, called the result “remarkably good” and said he hoped to remain prime minister but would not govern with the populist Latvia First party, which secured 13.4% . The pro-Russian Sovereign Power party followed with 11.6%, while the nationalist National Alliance, a current coalition partner, won 9.1% .
Security and affordability dominated the campaign in the NATO and EU member state, which borders Russia and Belarus. Kulbergs has pledged to maintain defense spending at 5% of GDP and expand anti-drone capabilities, citing Russia’s hybrid threats . His pro-Kremlin rivals, including Sovereign Power, advocated ending aid to Ukraine and focusing on domestic economic issues .
Final results are expected in the early hours of Oct. 4. United List will need coalition partners to secure a majority in the Saeima .
