A vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, causing engine room damage and a crew casualty, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported. Omani authorities are assisting the remaining crew and investigating the incident, according to UKMTO .
The attack follows a series of recent incidents in the strategic waterway. On Aug. 15, a bulk carrier was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by UKMTO. An ADNOC-operated vessel was also hit the same day, with the company confirming no injuries and a contained situation .
Maritime traffic through the strait has slowed significantly, with data from Kpler showing crossings at 3, 2, and 6 vessels over the past three days, well below the 10-day average of 11 ships. The data excludes vessels with transponders turned off .
Meanwhile, in the Black Sea, a Greek-flagged Suezmax-class tanker, the Skiros, was attacked Sunday after loading Russian crude at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium’s terminal near Novorossiysk, Bloomberg reported. The Athens-based manager of the Skiros confirmed no injuries or pollution, though the vessel’s owners were aware of the incident. The attack marked the first strike on a vessel calling at the CPC terminal in nearly three weeks .
The CPC terminal, a critical conduit for Kazakh crude exports, had previously considered halting operations due to environmental and safety risks but opted to continue. Ukrainian strikes in July had disrupted CPC shipments, reducing them to 1.3 million barrels per day, down 600,000 from May. A U.S.-mediated agreement in early August saw Ukraine agree to refrain from targeting CPC infrastructure and non-Russian vessels, provided they were not carrying Russian cargo or subject to Ukrainian sanctions .
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call to pursue diplomacy with Iran amid rising tensions. Erdogan emphasized the need for negotiations to address the standoff, offering Turkey’s assistance in brokering peace .
