Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff crashed out of Roland Garros in the second round today, falling to 28th seed Anastasia Potapova in a three-set thriller on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The 20-year-old American, who lifted the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen last year, surrendered her title defence with a 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 defeat after 1 hour and 52 minutes of play, as Potapova outmaneuvered her in extended baseline rallies .

Gauff’s exit marks the second consecutive year a defending women’s champion fails to reach the third round at Roland Garros, following Iga Świątek’s 2023 second-round loss. Potapova, ranked 42nd in the world, now advances to face either Naomi Osaka or another unseeded opponent in the next round, with Osaka securing her own third-round victory over Iva Jovic in a 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 marathon earlier today .

Elsewhere, sixth-seeded Amanda Anisimova became the latest high-profile casualty, ousted by unseeded French wildcard Jessika Parry in straight sets. Parry’s 6-4, 6-3 triumph propels her to her first Grand Slam fourth round, where she will meet world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who cruised past her second-round opponent in straight sets .

Injury marred the day’s proceedings, with Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez forced to retire from the doubles competition after tripping over a courtside advertising board during her second-round match. The incident compounds a disappointing tournament for Sonmez, who also exited the singles draw in the first round .

With Gauff’s early departure, the women’s draw now tilts toward Sabalenka, Osaka, and a resurgent Parry as contenders. The fourth round begins tomorrow, with Sabalenka set to face Osaka in a blockbuster clash on Chatrier.
