Defending champion Coco Gauff stunned by Anastasia Potapova in French Open second round
Defending French Open champion Coco Gauff crashed out of Roland Garros in the second round on Saturday after a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 defeat to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova. The 20-year-old American, who lifted the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen last year, failed to replicate her title-winning form on Court Philippe-Chatrier, ending her campaign in just 1 hour and 52 minutes .
Potapova, ranked 42nd in the world, broke Gauff’s serve three times and saved five of six break points to secure her first career victory over a reigning Grand Slam champion. The Austrian’s aggressive baseline game disrupted Gauff’s rhythm, particularly in the decisive third set, where she converted her second match point with a forehand winner .
Gauff’s exit marks the earliest departure of a defending women’s singles champion at Roland Garros since Jeļena Ostapenko in 2018. The loss also snaps her streak of three consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances, dating back to last year’s US Open .
Potapova advances to the third round, where she will face either France’s Diane Parry or American Amanda Anisimova. Gauff, who had won her opening match in straight sets, leaves Paris without a title defense and now turns her focus to the grass-court season, beginning with Wimbledon in three weeks.
