Daniel Kinahan, the alleged leader of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group, was extradited from Dubai to Ireland on Sunday and appeared in Dublin’s Special Criminal Court the same day. The 49-year-old Irish national was charged with directing the activities of a criminal organization between Oct. 18, 2015, and April 6, 2017, and faces a potential sentence of 20 to 30 years if convicted .
Kinahan was arrested in Dubai in April after a decade in the United Arab Emirates, where he had lived since 2016 following a series of high-profile incidents, including a deadly attack at Dublin’s Regency Hotel. U.S. authorities had previously named him as one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group in 2022, offering a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction .
Upon arrival at Casement Aerodrome, Kinahan was taken into custody by Detective Sergeant Colin Davidson and transported to the Criminal Courts of Justice in central Dublin. During his court appearance, he was informed that any bail application would require a high court hearing. Kinahan responded, “I think we know I won’t be getting bail, but thank you” .
Kinahan is now detained in Portlaoise Prison, where he is confined to a cell for approximately 20 hours a day. The facility offers limited amenities, including a small gym and restricted access to a library, a stark contrast to his previous lifestyle in Dubai .
The U.S. Treasury Department has previously stated that the Kinahan group was involved in a gang war with another organization in Ireland and Spain, resulting in numerous murders. The group is accused of controlling about a third of Europe’s cocaine supply, alongside involvement in firearms trafficking and racketeering .
Kinahan’s extradition follows a treaty between Ireland and the UAE, secured after the U.S. bounty intensified international pressure. He had previously denied all charges against him .
