Vacationer finds urn with 80-year-old mans ashes on Italian Adriatic beach
A vacationer discovered human remains in an urn while walking along the Adriatic coast in Marina di Chieuti, Italy, on Sunday. The urn contained the ashes of an 80-year-old Italian man who had lived in Germany and was cremated there, according to local authorities. The vessel bore a reference to a German crematorium.
The woman, who was walking alone on a quieter stretch of beach, reported the find to the nearest beach bar about 400 meters away. The bar’s operator then contacted Mayor Diego Iacono, who alerted the Carabinieri, Italy’s military police. The urn was subsequently seized for investigation.
Authorities are examining two possible explanations for its presence on the shore: either it was released during a sea burial in the Adriatic and washed ashore by currents, or it was intentionally and illegally left on the beach. Iacono told the Italian news agency Ansa that the case is being treated with the same seriousness as if a body had washed up. He did not specify which German crematorium was involved.
Marina di Chieuti is located at the northernmost point of Apulia on Italy’s Adriatic coast, a less crowded area compared to other resorts such as Rimini. Investigators have not disclosed further details about the man’s identity or the circumstances of his cremation in Germany.
