Putin urges Russians to vote in parliamentary election as show of support for Ukraine war
Russia began three days of voting for its 450-seat State Duma on Friday, with the first polling stations opening in the far eastern regions of Kamchatka and Chukotka. Early voting had already been underway since late August in remote areas and among soldiers at the front, with over 11,500 voters casting ballots in Kamchatka and 4,054 in Chukotka by September 17, according to regional election officials .
The election, Russia’s first parliamentary vote since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, features 10 parties on the ballot, but the only antiwar party, Yabloko, was removed by the Supreme Court in early August. United Russia, the Kremlin-linked party dominating the Duma, is projected to maintain or increase its majority, with President Vladimir Putin urging Russians to vote as a show of support for the war .
Voting is also being organized in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories for the first time, a move Kyiv has denounced. Putin framed the election as a demonstration of national unity, stating in a September 16 speech that it would show “millions of people stand behind our troops” .
Russia’s electoral commission announced 10 border voting points near Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to accommodate Russians living abroad. Official results for the 450-seat lower house are expected by September 22 .
