Germany on Tuesday formally accused Russia of orchestrating an explosive-laden drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August, prompting a wave of diplomatic protests and threats of new sanctions across the European Union and NATO.
The drone, discovered on Aug. 4 near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft in the airport’s secured area, was defused by authorities. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the device’s configuration, explosives, and detonation technology matched those used in other Russian hybrid operations, citing a “high degree of technical expertise and considerable organizational effort.” A second drone was later found near the airport, and a third on Aug. 25 alongside a suspected control device .
In response, Germany announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the termination of the lease for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin, suspected of espionage ties. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul summoned Russia’s ambassador and vowed further measures, stating, “Russia has escalated, Russia has carried out this hybrid attack, and now Russia must live with the consequences” .
The EU and multiple member states, including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Portugal, summoned Russian envoys in protest. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the incident “state-sponsored terrorism” and said the bloc would pursue sanctions against 1,600 individuals and entities linked to Russia’s military industry . European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that such attacks were “the new normal” and pledged to tighten restrictions on Moscow .
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed the alliance’s solidarity with Germany, while Russia denied involvement and summoned Germany’s chargé d’affaires in retaliation. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko hinted at possible severance of ties, though Moscow said it would first give diplomacy a chance .
