The strongest El Niño on record is intensifying, with sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific surpassing all previous highs, according to weather models and experts. The phenomenon, dubbed “Godzilla” and “Super” El Niño, is already driving extreme weather globally, with forecasts warning of 451,000 additional heat-related deaths between June 2026 and February 2027 .
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated earlier this month that “El Niño is being supersized before our eyes,” adding that “the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up” . The World Meteorological Organization has mobilized an unprecedented response to prepare for the extreme conditions ahead.
Regions are already experiencing disruptions. India has recorded below-normal monsoon rainfall, while southern Africa faces heightened drought risks. California Governor Gavin Newsom preemptively declared a state of emergency this month, anticipating flooding, landslides, and coastal erosion from winter storms linked to the event . Experts emphasize that while El Niño cannot be stopped, improved preparation and climate action could mitigate its impacts.
