U.S. aircraft carrier to relieve USS Abraham Lincoln in Middle East after 260-day deployment amid crew distress reports
The USS George Washington aircraft carrier is en route to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed in the region for more than 260 days, according to multiple reports. The Lincoln’s crew has faced growing concerns over mental health, supply shortages, and deteriorating conditions aboard the ship, which has supported U.S. military operations in Iran.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) pushed back on the reports, stating on social media that there had been “several false claims” and “rampant misreporting” about the Lincoln’s deployment. CENTCOM confirmed that one sailor fell overboard on Aug. 3 but was “quickly and safely recovered.” The command also noted the carrier has one of the highest reenlistment rates in the U.S. Navy at 84.4%, and that no crew members had died aboard the ship.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, wrote to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao on Wednesday, citing reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, mental health deterioration, deck safety concerns, and disruptions in the mail system causing care packages to be lost for months. Blumenthal also highlighted that recent carrier deployments had “repeatedly stretched beyond their originally anticipated durations.”
Hegseth, speaking in Panama on Thursday, dismissed the conditions as “completely misrepresented.” “We make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at every single moment,” he said. “Some deployments are longer than others, and I have more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody.”
Media reports, including from the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes, have detailed accounts of sailors attempting suicide by jumping overboard. One sailor was rescued after an hour in the water on Aug. 3, according to MS Now, while CNN reported a separate incident in July where a sailor in a life vest went overboard and was quickly retrieved. The Navy classified the July incident as a psychological episode, according to the reports.
The USS Abraham Lincoln has been participating in Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. military campaign against Iran under President Donald Trump. The ship’s deployment, originally expected to end in May, was extended indefinitely due to the conflict. The USS George Washington, departing from Vietnam, crossed the Strait of Malacca and is now moving toward the Middle East to relieve the Lincoln, according to a Telegram post from GeoPWatch. This would mark the fourth U.S. carrier deployed to the Iran war in six months.
