Israeli settlers attack Palestinian woman and NBC crew in West Bank village
Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian woman and an NBC News team in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, injuring all five victims in the village of Jalud near Nablus. The team was interviewing Aida Ahmed Abdullah, 51, who said settlers had driven her family from their home, when a car with Israeli license plates reversed toward them. At least four masked men exited the vehicle, striking the group with sticks and throwing rocks, according to NBC News correspondent Matt Bradley, who was hit twice in the arm and treated at a nearby clinic. Abdullah and three other team members were also injured and received medical care; her injuries were not life-threatening. Producer Lawahez Jabari said the attackers had sticks and a visible gun, though it was not used. Camera operator Khaldoon Eid said the team had not anticipated an attack in a village setting.
In nearby Qusra, dozens of masked settlers barricaded themselves inside a Palestinian home while residents were present, according to an Israel Defense Forces statement. The IDF said security forces worked to remove the rioters, separate the groups, and protect the residents, adding that settler vehicles suspected of being used to reach the area were confiscated. The statement noted reports of violent clashes, including stone-hurling toward Palestinians and civilians. Palestinian media and witnesses reported settlers pepper-sprayed residents, attempted to burn nearby Palestinian-owned fields, and that some residents were handcuffed, blindfolded, and beaten before being released. The IDF did not address allegations of tear gas use or abuse.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a rare condemnation of the violence, calling the attacks “criminal acts of violence” committed by “a handful of rioters” in Qusra and Jalud. He said such actions harm law-abiding settlers, hinder the Israeli army, and damage Israel’s global reputation, and he demanded the perpetrators be held accountable. The IDF confirmed operations in both villages to prevent further disturbances and restore order.
The attacks follow weeks of tension in the area, with settlers besieging homes in Qusra and Jalud earlier this month. Palestinian officials have accused Israeli forces of enabling settler aggression, while rights groups describe the violence as part of an effort to seize land in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli government has rejected claims of illegality regarding settlements. On Saturday, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported six Palestinians injured by tear gas inhalation during an Israeli raid on Al-Faraa refugee camp, part of broader operations across West Bank cities including Al-Bireh and Hebron.
