Germany submits Sandra Wollners Cannes-winning film Everytime for Oscar race
Germany will submit the German-Austrian film *Everytime* by Austrian director Sandra Wollner as its entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, German Films announced Tuesday in Munich.
The film, Wollner’s third feature after *Das unmögliche Bild* and *The Trouble with Being Born*, won the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Feature Film at the Sarajevo Film Festival last week. It also claimed the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The story follows Ella and her younger daughter Melli as they navigate daily life a year after the sudden death of their older daughter, Jessie. A trip to Tenerife with Jessie’s boyfriend, Lux, resurfaces repressed emotions and memories. The cast includes Birgit Minichmayr, Carla Hüttermann and Tristán López.
A jury cited the film’s “outstanding camerawork” by Gregory Oke, which creates a “shimmering, at times ethereal atmosphere,” and praised its ability to convey grief through purely cinematic means. “With *Everytime*, director and author Sandra Wollner achieves the feat of making grief tangible as a state of a world out of joint, using surprising lightness,” the jury stated. “Elegantly playing with form and narrative ellipses, *Everytime* explores the interstices of loss. Almost imperceptibly, memory and present, reality and imagination merge, making this film a major poetic cinematic experience.”
This year, up to three German productions could vie for the category due to a rule change: films that win top prizes at select festivals now automatically qualify for submission. Alongside *Everytime*, *Gelbe Briefe* by İlker Çatak, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, and *Von Scham und Geld* by Visar Morina, winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, are also eligible. Their production companies must still formally submit them.
The shortlist of 15 films will be announced Dec. 15, with five nominees revealed Jan. 21, 2027. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles. Under new Academy rules, the film itself is now the official nominee in the category, with the director accepting the award on behalf of the creative team.
