FIFA President Gianni Infantino arrived in the Dominican Republic on Friday despite a direct request from CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani to stay away from a Caribbean Football Union Under-14 tournament this weekend.
In a letter obtained by multiple outlets, including the Associated Press and BBC, Montagliani urged Infantino to reconsider attending the CFU Under-14 Series, stating his presence would “unfortunately undermine the technical nature of this important youth development activity.” Montagliani, a FIFA vice president, cited the “governance crisis surrounding FIFA” tied to Infantino’s now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which sought to sell stakes in World Cup commercial rights to private investors, including Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital .
Infantino proceeded with the trip, meeting Dominican Republic Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz, local officials, and football association head Jose Deschamps. He posted photos and videos on Instagram, writing, “I am very happy to be here in the Dominican Republic to discuss how we can continue our fruitful partnership to strengthen football and create more opportunities for young people in the country and the region” .
The request from Montagliani follows broader opposition to Infantino’s leadership. UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation have publicly criticized the FIFA president, accusing him of “deception” in a joint letter over the FFE plan, which was scrapped this month after widespread backlash . FIFA declined to comment on Montagliani’s request but noted it funds regional bodies like the CFU with up to $5 million per four-year World Cup cycle .
Infantino’s visit included a brief exchange with Sky News reporter James Matthews, who asked, “Have you betrayed football?” Infantino deflected, remarking on Matthews’ baldness: “Nice hairstyle. See you at the barber’s,” before entering a car .
The tournament remains part of FIFA’s Forward program, which supports youth development. Dominican officials welcomed Infantino, with Cruz stating his presence “puts us on the international football radar and opens great prospects for growth” . It remains unclear whether Infantino will attend the tournament itself.
