Migrants repatriated after clashing with Spanish troops in Ceuta as far-right protesters block UK port
Tensions over illegal migrant crossings flared in both Ceuta and Portsmouth over the weekend, with clashes, arrests, and protests reported in both locations.
In the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, 21 migrants were repatriated to Morocco after throwing stones at a military patrol near El Trampolín beach on Saturday night, according to the Spanish Association of Troops and Sailors (ATME) and local authorities La Libre El Mundo. The Civil Guard intervened, identifying the individuals involved, who were then voluntarily returned to Morocco. The altercation caused no injuries or material damage, authorities said. ATME condemned the attack as part of a pattern of aggression against military personnel in Ceuta, demanding the government grant soldiers authority to respond effectively El Mundo.
Meanwhile, in Portsmouth, UK, far-right protesters clashed with riot police on Saturday, blocking lifeboat crews from bringing migrants ashore a day after a similar standoff in Dover Financial Times The Guardian. Up to 500 masked demonstrators brought parts of the port town to a standstill, with police facing questions over their handling of the protests Financial Times.
The incidents follow weeks of heightened tensions in Ceuta, where thousands of migrants remain after a mass arrival from Morocco in late July. Local authorities estimate 10,000 migrants are still in the enclave, with repeated clashes between migrants, military patrols, and residents demanding their removal La Libre.
