Tennessee halts executions after Christa Pike survives two lethal injection attempts

Christa Pike, a 50-year-old Tennessee death row inmate, survived a botched lethal injection execution on Wednesday and remained in critical condition in a Nashville hospital on Thursday, receiving life-saving medical care, her lawyer Randy Spivey said.
Pike was administered two doses of pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution around 8 p.m. local time but was later heard snoring, Spivey stated. The execution team struggled for about an hour to establish intravenous access, using at least seven needles on her left arm alone, with one needle visibly bent upon removal, he added. Her right arm reportedly turned violet during the process, and blisters and burns later appeared around the injection sites.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee suspended all planned executions for the remainder of the year following the incident. Spivey confirmed Pike was alive but offered no further medical updates, while the defense requested her death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment. Pike was convicted in 1996 for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, committed when Pike was 18.
President Donald Trump, when asked about the case, called it an “interesting situation” and deferred to Tennessee authorities, adding, “It shouldn’t be very difficult” to execute inmates. Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson, a physician, echoed the sentiment, stating, “It should be easy to do.”
Amnesty USA and the U.N. commissioner on human rights condemned the execution attempt as “cruel,” while Pike’s legal team described it as “chemical torture.” Observers were kept in a darkened room behind a closed curtain for much of the procedure, with delayed updates on Pike’s condition and the eventual arrival of an ambulance.
