Max Verstappen climbs through field at Silverstone sprint race as Maria Sakkari targets Wimbledon third-round win
Max Verstappen fought back from a poor start to climb through the field at Silverstone on Saturday, as the Formula 1 British Grand Prix sprint race reached its decisive phase. The Dutchman, starting from 11th on the grid after qualifying struggles, overtook multiple rivals in the opening laps and now sits in the top five with less than 10 laps remaining. Verstappen’s recovery has been the defining storyline of the afternoon, with his Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez also making progress after an early setback. At Wimbledon, Maria Sakkari faces a critical third-round clash against Jasmine Paolini, a match that could propel the Greek into the last 16 and mark her return to the top 30. Sakkari, ranked 43rd, has won five of her last six meetings with Paolini, including a 6-4, 6-2 victory in Doha earlier this year. The Italian, seeded 13th, arrives with momentum after reaching the final in 2024 and has dropped just one set in her opening two rounds. For Sakkari, a win would secure her highest Wimbledon seeding since 2022 and further cement her resurgence after a dip to world No. 92 in May 2025 .
Four Italian men—Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini, and Andrea Vavassori—are in action today, with Cobolli facing Karen Khachanov in a high-stakes opener. Sonego, ranked 69th, will take on world No. 6 Taylor Fritz, a player he has never beaten in five previous meetings, including a 6-2, 6-3 loss at Wimbledon in 2018. Berrettini, the 51st seed, meets Grigor Dimitrov in a rematch of their 2019 Monte Carlo quarterfinal, where the Bulgarian prevailed 7-5, 6-4. Serena Williams makes her Wimbledon doubles debut alongside Venus Williams after organizers granted a rare exemption to their schedule. The sisters, who last played together in 2018, face Solana Sierra and Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in a match that has drawn extraordinary attention. Wimbledon officials confirmed the delay was approved to accommodate fan demand and Serena’s fitness considerations, though they stressed the decision would not compromise competition integrity .
In other tennis action, Alexander Zverev takes on David Giron in a marquee third-round match, while Czech players Jiří Lehečka, Marie Bouzková, and Linda Nosková all seek to advance. Nosková, ranked 37th, will face Romania’s Ana Bogdan in their fifth meeting of the season, having won three of their previous encounters .
Back on the track, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton are the standout home favorites at Silverstone, with Norris drawing a crowd of 16,000 in a dedicated grandstand. George Russell, however, remains overshadowed despite his strong Mercedes performance, as the British fans’ enthusiasm skews heavily toward the McLaren driver and seven-time world champion Hamilton .
