In Austin, Texas, police officers fatally shot a 17-year-old Black teenager, Anthoneil Williams II, after mistaking a water bottle in his waistband for a gun. The incident occurred early Friday morning at a community park. According to police, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a young person brandishing a gun. Body camera footage shows Williams lifting his shirt and reaching toward his waistband as officers told him to keep his hands up. Williams then raised both hands and extended them, with his hands positioned together in front of him as if pointing a weapon at the officers, police said. Three officers fired multiple rounds as Williams fell to the ground. First responders attempted to save his life, but the teenager died at the scene. The initial 911 call was made from Williams' phone. The teen's death has fueled outrage from city officials and community members who are calling for greater police accountability and has reignited a conversation about what mental health support can be provided before deadly force is used.
In Priekule, Latvia, a drunk police officer killed a man while off duty during a public event over the weekend. The officer has been taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.
In France, the discovery of five dead babies in southern France has led to the arrest of the mother and her partner. The grim discovery was made after the man alerted authorities to human remains at their residence. The 32-year-old woman and her partner are currently in custody and are being questioned by investigators.
