European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Greenland on Sunday for a two-day visit to sign a new EU-Greenland partnership declaration and announce major investments.
Von der Leyen was received at Nuuk airport by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. She said the visit aimed to strengthen a “unique partnership,” writing on social media, “We are family” .
The declaration is set to be signed on Monday, with investment pledges expected in the hundreds of millions of euros. Multiple sources reported a €200 million package would be announced during the visit . The Commission has also proposed €530 million for Greenland in its 2028–2034 budget .
Nielsen called the visit a sign of “a very close friendship, a good partnership” at a joint press appearance . The delegation’s agenda included a boat tour among icebergs and meetings with local and Danish leaders.
The trip follows repeated U.S. claims over Greenland, with President Donald Trump arguing the island’s strategic and resource wealth justifies American control. Von der Leyen’s visit underscores the EU’s stance amid these tensions .
