At least 11 people, including three children and two women, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to Lebanese officials. The deadliest raids since a US-mediated framework deal in June, the strikes targeted the villages of Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani, as well as the strategic Ali Taher hill near Nabatiyeh.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reported seven fatalities in Ansar, where a house was destroyed, and four more in Deir al-Zahrani, with 17 others wounded. Lebanese state news agency NNA said the Ansar strike killed an entire family, including a mother and her four children. Rescuers were seen combing through rubble at the scene, where a swimming pool was clouded with dust and debris.
Israel’s military confirmed it struck Hezbollah infrastructure in the areas of Nabatieh and Ansar, describing the operation as retaliation for Hezbollah attacks on Israeli forces in the Ali al-Taher ridge area. The Israeli army later stated that Hezbollah had attacked its troops inside a designated security zone in southern Lebanon, calling it a “serious violation of the agreement.”
Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, vowed an “appropriate response” to the strikes and urged Lebanese authorities to abandon what it called the “humiliating path of direct negotiations” with Israel. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attacks, stating on X that the victims in Ansar “are not military infrastructure and the children and women killed were not military targets.”
The strikes came as Israel and Lebanon were preparing for an eighth round of US-sponsored direct negotiations in Rome next month. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said the attacks sent “a clear message on the negotiations process and American efforts aiming to implement this agreement.”
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited in early March following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and escalated into a full-scale war involving Israeli ground operations in southern Lebanon. Israel claims to have established a security zone in the area to prevent Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel.
