Alcaraz confirms U.S. Open return after wrist injury layoff to defend title

Carlos Alcaraz will defend his U.S. Open title after confirming his return from a four-month absence due to a right wrist injury. The 23-year-old Spaniard, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, announced his comeback on social media Thursday with a post featuring the U.S. Open logo and the caption, “Here we go.”
Alcaraz has not competed since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open in early April, missing both the French Open and Wimbledon as a result. His last match was a first-round victory in Barcelona before the injury forced his withdrawal. Despite the extended break, he remains the world No. 2, having won seven Grand Slam titles, including back-to-back U.S. Open crowns in 2022 and 2023.
The U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, begins Aug. 31 at Flushing Meadows in New York. Alcaraz’s return adds intrigue to the men’s draw, particularly as top-ranked Jannik Sinner has also been sidelined with a right knee injury. Sinner, who won Wimbledon this year, withdrew from the ongoing Cincinnati Open to focus on preparing for New York.
Prize money for this year’s U.S. Open has been increased to £79 million, according to reports, amid discussions of a potential player boycott .
Alcaraz’s absence from the hard-court swing included a late withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open, where commentators had speculated whether he would attempt to play a Grand Slam without match preparation. His last competitive outing before the injury was a 22-3 start to the season, which included victories at the Australian Open and another tournament following his 2023 U.S. Open triumph over Sinner.
In the women’s draw, Elena Rybakina’s bid to overtake Aryna Sabalenka as world No. 1 suffered a setback when she retired from her Cincinnati Open quarterfinal against Iga Swiatek due to a left ankle injury. Rybakina, the Australian Open champion, needed to reach the final to claim the top ranking after Sabalenka’s early exit. Swiatek, who defeated Rybakina in the Canadian Open final last week, will face American Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. Sabalenka is the two-time defending U.S. Open women’s singles champion.
