Ukraine warns of budget crisis, urges parliament to pass IMF laws to unlock 29.5 billion in funding
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi on Sept. 14 warned that the state budget is nearing a crisis and urged lawmakers to pass IMF-required legislation to secure international funding.
Koretskyi said the situation with state finances is approaching a critical point and that failure to advance the bills could cost Ukraine a significant portion of $29.5 billion in planned funds. He announced the dismissal of acting State Tax Service Head Lesia Karnaukh amid the budget shortfall and said parliament would receive a detailed schedule outlining deadlines for each required vote .
The government will accelerate implementation of over 40 decisions needed to secure the funds, though it has not committed to completing all 42 required measures by Oct. 15. Koretskyi said officials are working with lawmakers to ensure support for the bills, which are necessary for social programs and the military .
Zelensky reiterated the urgency in his evening address, stating that the list of laws and government decisions is specific and must be adopted to close the budget gap. He called on parliamentarians and the government to work together seamlessly, emphasizing that the measures include both popular and unpopular steps but are essential for securing international funding .
The Cabinet of Ministers will send lawmakers a schedule with clear voting deadlines for the critical bills .
