Zelenskyy warns Russia of energy blackouts in retaliation for winter strikes on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday warned Russia of proportional retaliation if it targets Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this winter, stating that Moscow would face blackouts of its own if it disrupts power supplies. "Russia knows that if they strike – and they are preparing to strike our energy system this winter – Russia will receive the same in return," Zelenskyy wrote on X. "If they cause blackouts for us, we will try to respond in fitting fashion."
Zelenskyy also urged the U.S. to impose stronger sanctions on Russia without delay, calling on Congress to pass legislation championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. "Sanctions need to be imposed now," he said at the Yalta European Strategy meeting, adding that he sometimes fails to understand bureaucratic delays in Washington. He emphasized that punitive measures are essential to depriving Russia of its ability to finance the war.
Despite the confrontational tone, Zelenskyy reiterated that negotiations remain Ukraine’s preferred path to ending the conflict. He proposed a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S., alongside an energy truce to protect both countries’ infrastructure and the unblocking of Black Sea shipping routes. The comments followed a Russian drone strike on a Kyiv petrol station that killed two people and injured four, according to the city’s mayor .
