Saturday, July 25Saturday, July 25A Canadian citizen of Chinese origin, who was an intern at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, has been arrested on suspicion of spying for a third country and participating in a criminal organization, the Belgian federal prosecutor's office announced on Saturday.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday by the federal judicial police in Charleroi, following an investigation initiated by SHAPE's security services, which reported the matter to the General Intelligence and Security Service (SGRS). The prosecutor's office took over the case and entrusted the investigation to the federal judicial police.
"She is suspected of spying on behalf of a third country and of being a member of a criminal organization," the prosecutor's office said in a statement. The suspect's home and workplace at SHAPE were searched on Thursday.
The judge issued an arrest warrant on Friday, July 24, 2026. The successful operation was the result of effective cooperation between SHAPE, SGRS, and the federal judicial police.
The prosecutor's office did not specify the nature of the alleged spying or the third country involved. The investigation is ongoing, and the prosecutor's office has stated that it will not provide further information to protect the integrity of the investigation.
SHAPE is NATO's military headquarters responsible for planning and conducting the alliance's operations in Europe.
