Spanish police arrested a man early Thursday in Puerto Lumbreras suspected of fatally stabbing his partner in a Murcia shopping center the previous day, authorities confirmed.

The victim, a 44-year-old woman, was found dead around 5:25 p.m. on Wednesday in the storage area of a shoe store inside the Carrefour Infante mall. A colleague discovered her body after the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, allegedly attacked her with a knife, closed the shop, and fled the scene. The woman worked at the Súper Rápido shoe store, where the suspect was also employed, according to La Verdad de Murcia.

The couple had a daughter together and were in the process of separation, sources close to the investigation told local media. The Delegation of the Government in the Region of Murcia stated that the case is being treated as a potential instance of gender-based violence. The investigation is being led jointly by the Homicide Group and the Family and Women’s Attention Unit (UFAM), with support from the Provincial Brigade of Scientific Police.

Francisco Lucas Ayala, the government delegate in Murcia, expressed condolences to the victim’s family. Murcia Mayor Rebeca Pérez condemned the killing in a post on X, writing, “We join the pain of the family and those who today mourn a life taken in the most brutal way. No, no, and always no to violence. Not one more.”

The arrest occurred hours after a separate incident in Asturias, where a Civil Guard officer allegedly killed his ex-partner, also a Civil Guard agent registered in the VioGén domestic violence monitoring system, at the Llanes barracks. Authorities have not released further details on that case.
