Sabalenka rallies past Noskova in US Open quarterfinal to extend semifinal streak
Aryna Sabalenka rallied from a third-set deficit to defeat Linda Noskova 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 7-6 (10-7) in a US Open quarterfinal on Tuesday, extending her streak to six consecutive semifinals at Flushing Meadows. The two-time defending champion, who had not dropped a set in the tournament before facing the Czech sixth seed, saved her campaign with a second-serve ace to close the match after 2 hours and 22 minutes.
Sabalenka struck 42 winners but converted only two of nine break points against Noskova, the 21-year-old Wimbledon champion, who fired 18 aces and 46 winners. Trailing 4-2 in the third set, Sabalenka broke at love to level at 4-4 before prevailing in the tiebreaker despite dropping the first two points. “What a battle,” Sabalenka said. “I was pushing myself to the limit in this match, especially in the third set. I honestly thought the match was over and that’s what helped me to feel loose and go for my shots.”
The victory marked Sabalenka’s 18th straight win at the US Open and her first over a top-10 player since March. She will next face the winner of the all-American quarterfinal between Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro .
