Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides chaired a National Council meeting at the Presidential Palace on Monday, briefing members on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem following visits by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and EU Special Representative Raffaele Fitto last week. The session lasted over two and a half hours and concluded at around 1:15 p.m., according to the President’s Press Office Director Victoras Papadopoulos .

Papadopoulos told reporters that Christodoulides detailed his meetings with Guterres, including a bilateral discussion and sessions with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. The president also updated the Council on Fitto’s visit and exchanged views on next steps, with preparations already underway to reach an expanded conference announced by Guterres. Papadopoulos noted that Guterres had secured a green light from all parties for the conference and emphasized that efforts would proceed within UN parameters, based on previous convergences .

Christodoulides is ready to hold weekly meetings with Erhürman to advance progress toward resuming talks, Papadopoulos added . The president has also made himself available to the UN throughout August to support the Secretary-General’s efforts .

Reactions from political leaders varied. Odysseas Michaelides of Alma said the Cyprus problem remains “on life support,” stating, “We did not pull the plug, but it did not come out of intensive care either” . Fidias Panayiotou of Direct Democracy Cyprus called for greater public participation, urging transparency on convergences discussed in the National Council . Elam leader Christos Christou reiterated opposition to confidence-building measures and a federal solution . House President Annita Demetriou advocated for restraint in public statements, saying, “The less we say, the more we let diplomacy work” .

Separately, a government source confirmed that Cyprus Intelligence Service Director Tasos Tzionis visited Lebanon in June, meeting with Lebanese military and intelligence officials. A report by Al-Akhbar claimed Tzionis also met with Hezbollah leadership, though the source declined to confirm the details. The visit focused on bilateral relations, maritime border delimitation, and cooperation on energy and security issues .
