Deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake off Indonesias Flores Island kills at least 20, triggers tsunami warning
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Flores Island at 5:58 a.m. local time on Saturday, killing at least 20 people and injuring six, according to rescue officials. The shallow quake, centered 68 kilometers northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province at a depth of 10 kilometers, triggered a tsunami warning that was later lifted after no significant sea-level changes were detected .
Fathur Rahman, head of the search and rescue agency in Maumere, said 20 deaths were confirmed across four towns, with two people still buried under rubble in Manggarai regency. “Our focus will be on locating the victims who are buried under the rubble,” Rahman said by telephone from a boat en route to Nagekeo, the hardest-hit area . Landslides blocked roads to Nagekeo, complicating rescue efforts, while power outages and collapsed buildings hindered operations in multiple towns.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 7.7 magnitude, followed by strong aftershocks, including one measuring 6.1 . Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) initially issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas, urging residents to evacuate to higher ground. The alert was withdrawn after sea levels showed no significant rise, though minor tsunami waves of 19–30 centimeters were recorded in some areas .
Residents in Maumere and Nagekeo described panic as the quake struck. Lukas Lotar, a 31-year-old hospital employee in Maumere, said, “Suddenly it started to shake and I panicked. The patients also fled; the shaking was strong. I saw that some walls had cracked” . Yohanes Babo, a 56-year-old Nagekeo resident, recounted, “The shaking was strong. Thankfully, we were already outside. People were panicking, running here and there” .
Approximately 2,000 people were evacuated from coastal areas, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) . The quake caused widespread structural damage, with images showing collapsed buildings and residents fleeing to higher ground. Rescue teams continued to assess the full extent of the damage as aftershocks persisted.
