Europe swelters under extended heat warnings as Portugal expands alerts to 16 districts
Europe is grappling with extreme heatwaves as temperatures remain unusually high for the season, with forecasts warning of persistent warmth across the continent. In Portugal, the Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) extended a yellow heat warning to 16 districts, with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C in most of mainland Portugal through Wednesday. The alert, initially covering 11 districts, now includes Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Lisbon, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre, among others .
In France, Météo-France reported that temperatures remain "quite warm for the season," with peaks of 34°C, as the country emerges from its hottest summer on record since measurements began in 1900 .
Meanwhile, in Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged the climate crisis after firefighters contained the largest wildfire in decades in North Rhine-Westphalia. "This is climate change," Merz told emergency responders, adding that such events would occur more frequently. He pledged efforts to combat climate change but stressed the need to adapt to its impacts. Climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf noted growing concerns over the weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a critical ocean current that could lead to more extreme temperature swings in Europe, with hotter summers and potentially colder winters in the north .
