Car plows into Newcastle Knights fans in Australia, injuring 10 including children
A car plowed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights rugby league fans in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, injuring 10 people, including several children, according to New South Wales police.
Two of the injured—a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man—were in critical condition, while the other eight, including another 5-year-old and a 2-year-old, were in stable condition at a hospital. Police arrested the 18-year-old driver at the scene in the suburb of Wallsend, about 110 km north of Sydney, and said initial indications suggested the crash was not terrorism-related.
The crowd had gathered to farewell the Newcastle Knights ahead of their National Rugby League grand final against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday. Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris said the driver, a rugby league fan, appeared to have lost control of the vehicle. “He was revving the car, he was excited, he was a supporter, he was there for the joy of the moment,” Morris told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “Somehow he lost control of the car … and he’s gone into the crowd.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a social media post: “My thoughts are with everyone injured or involved in the horrible incident this morning in Newcastle. Rugby league brings people together, and this should have been a weekend of excitement and pride for Newcastle fans.”
