ESA awards Spanish rocket firm 158.9 million to boost MIURA 5 launches from French Guiana
The European Space Agency signed its first contracts under the European Launcher Challenge on Aug. 27, awarding €158.9 million to Spain’s PLD Space to scale up MIURA 5 launches and develop new orbital capabilities. The funding, primarily backed by Spain with a German contribution, will support improvements to the MIURA 5 rocket, including enhanced payload capacity, extended orbital reach, and propulsive landing for future reusability .
PLD Space, based in Alicante, will use the contract to consolidate commercial launch services and increase its launch cadence through 2030, responding to growing international demand for the MIURA 5. The company’s executive director, Ezequiel Sánchez, called the agreement “a major endorsement of the company’s technological roadmap” .
The ESA also awarded contracts to German launch providers Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg, with a combined value near €385 million. Isar Aerospace separately secured €200 million from the ESA for its own launcher development .
The MIURA 5 is designed to carry payloads up to 540 kilograms and will launch from Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana. PLD Space previously flew its MIURA 1 demonstrator in 2023, which informed the MIURA 5’s development. The ESA’s European Launcher Challenge aims to reduce Europe’s reliance on foreign launchers for satellite deployment .
