OpenAI launches Dots AI assistants and GPT-6.1 Sol model at DevDay event
OpenAI unveiled Dots, its new always-on AI assistants, and the GPT-6.1 Sol model at its DevDay event on Tuesday. Dots are cloud-based agents that operate continuously across over 4,000 supported apps, learning user preferences and performing multistep tasks with minimal oversight, according to the company. Users can interact with Dots via a text interface or voice calls in ChatGPT, with integrations for Microsoft Teams and Slack, and text message support coming soon .
The assistants are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model and run on their own cloud computers, allowing them to browse the web, access apps, and provide updates as they work. OpenAI demonstrated use cases such as a Dot monitoring customer feedback to implement app updates or a content creator’s Dot generating show notes and social posts from interview transcripts .
Alongside Dots, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, a mid-range model priced at one-fifth the cost of GPT-6 Astra. Sol is positioned for professional work, coding, and computer use, with pricing starting at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens via the API. OpenAI’s benchmarks suggest Sol delivers near-Astra performance at lower costs, though the company acknowledges the comparison relies on its own tests .
Dots are initially available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with OpenAI envisioning future teams of specialized Dots working together. The launch follows Meta’s recent release of its Muse AI assistant, which offers similar agentic capabilities .
