Thursday, July 30Thursday, July 30Angharad Evans, a swimmer from Scotland, has emerged as a breakout star at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Evans won gold medals in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events and contributed to Scotland's silver and bronze medals in relay events.
Evans, who describes herself as a "nervous swimmer," kept her expectations low, which she believes helped her perform well. "I disassociate the idea of getting a medal because that's when I operate best," she told BBC Scotland. Her strategy paid off, as she ended the swimming meet with two gold medals, a silver, and a bronze.
The crowd's support and the presence of her teammates made a significant impact on Evans. "It makes it a lot easier doing it in front of a crowd like that and with your team-mates you train with every day," she said. After her 200m gold, she looked stunned as the crowd cheered around her. She managed to spot her family and boyfriend in the small arena and received hugs from them.
Evans' performance has been a highlight of the Glasgow Games for Scotland. She trains at Stirling University and credits her success to the hard work she and her team have put in. "It's been a big step forward in my career," Evans told BBC Scotland. "There are things I've battled with this week. I don't hide from my nerves - it's something I'm very open about."
Looking ahead, Evans plans to take a break before focusing on the European Championships next week. "Right now it's just taking a breath and taking it in before we hit Europeans," she said.
In other news from the Commonwealth Games, Cyprus has enjoyed a strong opening week, winning five medals so far. The island nation has participated in the Games since 1978, missing only one edition in 1986 due to a historic boycott.
Meanwhile, in football news, Roberto Mancini, the new head coach of Italy's national team, has apologized for leaving the team for a position in Saudi Arabia. Mancini, who previously led Italy to victory in the European Championship, expressed his regret and commitment to leading the team back to its former glory.
