SpaceX wins 8.1 billion in Pentagon contracts for missile defense satellite networks

SpaceX has secured a central role in the Pentagon’s next-generation missile defense architecture, with recent Space Force contracts totaling roughly $8.1 billion positioning the company as a key supplier of satellite networks and communications infrastructure. The awards include a $2.29 billion contract in May for the Space Data Network, a $4.16 billion deal for the space-based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program, and a $1.6 billion order in late July for 18 Falcon 9 launches to deploy satellites supporting the Space-Based Sensing and Targeting portfolio by the end of 2027 .
The Space & Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, opened this week amid this shift, as more missile defense functions migrate into space and Pentagon investment flows to commercial space sector leaders like SpaceX. The company’s Starshield business, identified in its first quarterly financial report as a public company, has already amassed over $6 billion in multiyear awards for military communications and sensing networks .
Meanwhile, Northrop Grumman is developing an integrated missile defense architecture that connects space-based sensors and battle management systems to enhance coordination across defense platforms . Lockheed Martin and L3Harris Technologies also completed a successful hot-fire test of the stage two advanced large solid rocket motor for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency’s Next Generation Interceptor program .
In Europe, 10 countries, including Ukraine and nine European states, launched the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Coalition in Paris on July 13, aiming to develop a sovereign upper layer of missile defense. The following day, Airbus Defense and Space, Destinus, MBDA Deutschland, Safran Electronics & Defense, and Thales signed a Letter of Intent to establish the Bliksem EXO Consortium, targeting the delivery of Europe’s first exo-atmospheric interceptor capable of defeating medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during mid-course flight. The consortium plans to begin joint engineering work in August and conduct the first test of the Exo-atmospheric Kill Vehicle in space as early as 2027 .
Thomas Gottschild, managing director of MBDA Deutschland, stated that the agreement “marks an important step towards strengthening Europe’s collective defense capabilities through closer cooperation and shared expertise.” Rob Jetten, prime minister of the Netherlands, added, “This is how European cooperation becomes real protection against ballistic threats” .
The U.S. Army’s Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, head of Space and Missile Defense Command, called for a more comprehensive missile defeat strategy, emphasizing interceptors alongside non-kinetic effects such as electronic warfare and directed energy, as well as improved command and control targeting .
