Zelensky tells UN Putin escalates war, warns of winter energy strikes on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of escalating the war and warning of potential winter strikes on energy infrastructure.
Zelensky called Putin “patient zero” of the conflict, stating, “The longer Putin is able to wage war, the more evil he will leave behind in this world.” He emphasized that Ukraine did not choose the war but is fighting to preserve its independence, families, and freedom. Zelensky also warned that if Russia continues targeting Ukraine’s energy systems, Kyiv would respond by making the winter “painful for Russia too,” urging de-escalation steps before the cold season .
He accused Putin of enlisting fighters from 47 countries, including North Korea, Ghana, and India, to sustain the war effort. Zelensky noted that two captured North Korean troops had been transferred to South Korea, adding, “Putin is always looking for someone who can help him kill more” .
Zelensky also highlighted Russia’s military losses, stating that over 248,000 Russian soldiers had been killed or seriously wounded in the first eight months of 2026, with minimal territorial gains. He stressed the need for global pressure to disrupt Russia’s finances and war production, warning of the risks of AI-driven warfare by next year .
More than 50 U.N. member states issued a joint statement calling for a complete, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire and substantive peace negotiations .
