Manchester United draw at Fulham after Cunhas late equalizer spares third defeat in a week
Matheus Cunha’s deflected strike in the 89th minute rescued a 1-1 draw for Manchester United at Fulham on Sunday, sparing the visitors a third defeat in a week. The Brazilian forward canceled out Lisandro Martinez’s comical own goal, which had put Fulham ahead after Senne Lammens’ botched save from Calvin Bassey’s shot deflected off Martinez and into the net.
United, managed by Michael Carrick, had struggled for fluency, with Lammens making several key saves to keep the score level before the own goal. Cunha’s equalizer, which took a heavy deflection off Fulham’s David Affengruber, ensured United avoided a third consecutive loss following defeats to Manchester City and Brighton.
Fulham, seeking their first Premier League win of the season under Alvaro Arbeloa, had earlier squandered chances, including Gonzalo Garcia’s early shot wide and Oscar Bobb’s missed opportunity. Lammens also denied Josh King and Alex Iwobi in a frantic second half before Cunha’s late intervention.
Cunha acknowledged the team’s slow start to the second half, telling Sky Sports, “It was frustrating for us. After their goal, we played with much more enthusiasm and character. That must happen from the start.” Fulham’s Sander Berge told Viaplay, “It’s bitter. When you hold out so long and have a 1-0 lead, you want to secure it. We didn’t manage that today.”
